When you should not use this medicine

You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to valacyclovir or acyclovir (Zovirax®). Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to famciclovir (Famvir®) or ganciclovir (Cytovene®).

How to use and store this medicine

Caplets:

  • Your doctor will tell you how much to take and how often. Keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor tells you to, even if your symptoms are better.
  • If you are taking valacyclovir to treat shingles, it is best if you start taking the medicine as soon as you can after your doctor has told you that you have shingles.
  • You may take the medicine with or without food.
  • Store the caplets at room temperature, away from heat, direct light, and moisture.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.

If you miss a dose:

  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.
  • Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next usual dose.
  • You should not use two doses at the same time.

How to use this medicine

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking probenecid (Benemid®).

Warnings

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you have kidney disease or AIDS, or have had a bone marrow transplant before you take this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not get better or if they are worse after taking this medicine for several days.

Side effects

Call your doctor right away if you have any of these side effects:

  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Yellowing of your skin or eyes

If you have problems with these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor.

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
